The June Drop: What does it mean + how does it shape what we do?

Our name, explained, and how it relates to our process and vision.

If you’ve ever stood beneath a fruit tree in early summer, you may have noticed something unexpected—small, unripe fruit scattered across the ground. This natural phenomenon is called the June drop: a moment when a tree, carrying more fruit than it can sustain, lets some of it fall away so the rest can fully grow.

We’ve always loved that idea.

At The June Drop, our name comes from this exact moment in nature—when there is simply too much beauty to hold onto all at once. It’s a kind of quiet abundance-- a healthy result of letting go in order to flourish.

Our brand is built on the belief that fine art should feel accessible—something you can live with every day, not something distant or out of reach. Much of our work is inspired by fruit and flora, subjects that naturally reflect growth, color, and seasonality. These are also the motifs our lead artist, Stephen D’Onofrio, is best known for: bold, vibrant compositions that celebrate the richness of the natural world.

But behind every finished piece is a much larger creative process.

Sketches, alternate colorways, variations, and ideas that don’t always make it into the gallery—these are the “extra fruit,” so to speak. Instead of letting that work disappear, The June Drop exists as a place where those pieces can find a home. It’s where the abundance of Stephen’s practice opens up to a broader audience.

Additionally, our logo—the simple green “JD”—was inspired by one of our tulip designs. If you look closely, the letterforms carry the same gentle curve as a drooping tulip, the kind you see in late spring when it’s just past peak bloom. It’s a small detail, but it reflects the same idea we’re drawn to everywhere else: beauty in transition, in softness, in letting go.

We officially launched on June 1st, 2025, right at the start of that natural cycle of abundance. And moving forward, we’re leaning into that rhythm. Each year on June 1st, we’ll release a new collection of designs—an annual drop shaped by everything created, gathered, and ready to be shared.

Think of it as our version of a June drop.

A cycle when the studio overflows—and we pass that abundance on to you.

We can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on!

Happy Spring!
